Genre helps recognise and classify what the audience likes and wants and by extension determines the social groups that are part of a genre's target audience. To be specific, it may be used to outline a certain viewer demographic(
classes A-E, from white collar jobs, blue collar jobs, skilled servicemen to unemployed and students) or a psychographic group(
mainstreamers, explorers, resigned) . The word is derived from the
French word for type or kind. Film goers and regular TV viewers like to have a general idea of what they are going to watch before they watch it. Therefore, many viewers will gain a familiarity with the most common genres they watch.
